Step Up for Safety - National Ladder Safety Awareness Month

Climb the Ladder of Awareness
Its March! That means it’s Ladder Safety Month. Since ladder accidents are one of the leading causes of workplace injuries, March is the month dedicated to bringing awareness to this issue. Each year around 34 000 people fall off ladders in Canada annually; most of these falls are caused by a lack of knowledge when using ladders.
Learn About Ladder Safety One Step At A Time
Some tips to keep you and everyone around you safe:
- When choosing a ladder, make sure the ladder is suitable for the height you need to climb
- Have a reliable, durable ladder and ensure there are no faulty mechanisms before climbing
- Always keep three points of contact between you and the ladder- two hands and one foot or two feet and one hand
- Wear proper, clean footwear without mud, ice, or grease
- When using a long ladder or tying/untying ladder extension, have a second person hold the bottom of the ladder
- Observe you’re surrounding and spot any potential hazards before you climb; this could be any harnesses or ties on you that may interfere while you climb the ladder
- Keep a firm grip while you climb
- Do not use aluminum ladders when working near electricity
- Reposition the ladder to work from the center of the steps
- If your knees are above the top step, then you are too high!
