Ascending With Confidence: Celebrating National Ladder Safety Awareness

Climb the Ladder of Awareness
Welcome to March – Ladder Safety Month! With ladder accidents ranking among the top causes of workplace injuries, this month is dedicated to raising awareness about this critical issue. In Canada alone, approximately 34,000 people suffer falls from ladders each year, highlighting the urgent need for improved knowledge and practices in ladder usage.

Learn About Ladder Safety One Step At A Time
Some tips to keep you and everyone around you safe:
- When choosing a ladder, make sure the ladder is suitable for the height you need to climb
- Have a reliable, durable ladder and ensure there are no faulty mechanisms before climbing
- Always keep three points of contact between you and the ladder- two hands and one foot or two feet and one hand
- Wear proper, clean footwear without mud, ice, or grease
- When using a long ladder or tying/untying ladder extension, have a second person hold the bottom of the ladder
- Observe you’re surrounding and spot any potential hazards before you climb; this could be any harnesses or ties on you that may interfere while you climb the ladder
- Keep a firm grip while you climb
- Do not use aluminum ladders when working near electricity
- Reposition the ladder to work from the center of the steps
- If your knees are above the top step, then you are too high!

Additional recommendations include:
- Refrain from attempting to shift or move a stepladder while standing on it.
- Exercise caution when using tools requiring substantial leverage, as this action could compromise balance and lead to falls.
- Never stand, climb, or sit on the top or pail shelf of a stepladder.
- Avoid ascending beyond the top two rungs or steps of the ladder.
- Prohibit others from working beneath the ladder to minimize risks to both yourself and coworkers.
It’s crucial to recognize that promoting a culture of safety extends far beyond a single month or campaign. Each day presents opportunities to prioritize our well-being and that of those around us. By integrating the principles of ladder safety into our daily routines, we not only protect ourselves from harm but also contribute to safer working environments for everyone.
